How to Pay for Parking in Northern Ireland

Choose Duration - A fairer way to pay for parking for consumers.

From 1st November, the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) — who manage parking across Northern Ireland — have introduced a new way to pay for parking. JustPark is updating our app to match this new policy.

Instead of starting and stopping your session, you’ll now:

  • ✔️ Choose how long you want to stay when you arrive
  • ✔️ Pay only for that time — no held funds or pending charges
  • ✔️ Extend your stay easily in the app if you need more time
  • ✔️ Consumer not out of pocket - No waiting for 3-5 days for banks to release pending charge

That’s it — no more pending charges, no waiting for your bank to release funds, and no surprises.

💳 Why is this better?

  • No held funds — you’ll only ever pay the parking fee, nothing extra is “blocked” on your account.
  • No forgetting to Stop your session — no risk of being overcharged if you forget or lose signal.
  • Clear and simple — you know exactly what you’re paying from the start.
  • Easier for regular parkers — no more waiting for pending amounts to clear from your bank.

🤔 “But I liked Start/Stop…”

We’ve heard some drivers say they preferred Start/Stop because they could finish parking whenever they liked. Here’s what’s really happening 👇

Questions

  • “I don’t need to plan ahead — I just stop the session when I’m done.”
  • “Now I’ll have to guess my stay and might overpay or risk a fine.”
  • "Now I need to remember when to extend - If I don't I'll get a fine!"

Answers

  • Start/Stop actually held the full day’s fee when you began parking — even if you only stayed an hour.
  • When you pressed ‘Stop’, we released the hold instantly, but your bank often took 3–5 days to return it.
  • So you were out of pocket for 3-5 days!
  • With this new method, you only pay once for the time you choose — no holds, no delays, no uncertainty.
  • If you need more time, just extend in the app before your session ends — simple and stress-free.
  • Download the JustPark app and allow notifications, we will alert you when you're session is running out so you can just tap to extend.
  • If you are not using the app - choose SMS reminder as an add on and pay 20p for a reminder (cheaper than a fine).

Bottom line: You stay in control of your time and money — just without the wait.
